Whenever someone we admire reveals their home’s signature scent, we’re all ears (noses?). It feels like being let in on a secret to get the inside scoop on a tastemaker’s fancy incense, budget-friendly buys, or covetable candles. So when Sarah Sherman Samuel released her bed and bath collection with Lulu and Georgia earlier this month, we couldn’t help but ask what the Michigan-based interior designer uses to scent her own home. She let us in on her go-to bedroom diffuser, and her staple hand soap.
You likely know Byredo from its squat, black-topped perfume bottles and ethereal names like Mojave Ghost and Gypsy Water. The 20-year-old Swedish brand earns its place on the cool kids’ shelves through seductive, enigmatic blends, so it’s no wonder Samuel has stocked her sink with the Suede hand wash. The refreshing, floral scent carries notes of bergamot, violet, and amber, and arrives in recyclable, refillable packaging.
Samuel divulged that she doesn’t use a candle, incense, or even a room spray in her bedroom, but rather a diffuser from New York–based designer Matthew Fisher. Each set includes a stone sculpture, a cast tray, and a perfume oil—just drip the oil onto the stone to disperse the fragrance into the air. The Demeter scent is woodsy to its core, with cedar, sandalwood, and fir mingling alongside mandarin and pomegranate.
