Maybe it was the run of home tours in a row or the Instagram post I saw on so many of my industry friends’ stories. Or perhaps it was when designers Jake Arnold and Athena Calderone debuted collections for Crate & Barrel. However we got here, it’s clear: we’re in an era of oversize wicker pendant lamps.
Taking a cue from the colossal paper shades by Noguchi & Co., these woven pieces act just like statement furniture when hung over dining tables and beds, in a large living room, or even above a kitchen bar. That is, they have a wow factor and don’t need much of a supporting cast. We define an oversize pendant as 30 inches in diameter or larger—and sourced 20 lookers in all shapes and sizes, below.
The dome shape is one of the most versatile out there, and our picks drive this point home. Woven makes some of our favorite rattan outdoor furniture, so it’s no surprise it can craft a cool lamp from the same material, too. You can actually find a fanciful option on Amazon, and Pottery Barn’s is as classic as they get. We love the elegant double dome from Soho Home, and the more shallow shapes favored by McGee & Co. and Amber Interiors echo a similar vintage style in this California farmhouse.
Pairing sharp geometry with a natural material moves things away from cottagecore toward something more modern. Such is the case with these fixtures, starting with Ferm Living’s elegant Dou shade (which I saw in person at the company’s showroom in Copenhagen recently). Dabito’s Perilla pendant lamp for Mitzi flips things on their head, while the Lilliana from Joss & Main goes darker than the rest. And if I tell you how thrilled I was that Pooky Lighting’s Aphrodite style cleared the size threshold, you’ll think I was a little off-kilter.
An oversize globe can go all sorts of stylistic ways. Serena & Lily’s Santa Barbara pendant lamp is a traditional take, while an Indonesian-made option from Chairish leans into the ’70s with a more open structure. The two squat versions, from Pottery Barn and Soho Home, showcase different hues and shapes as well as negative space.
Designers are playing with wicker pendant lamps a lot these days, with scallops, waves, steel details, and more in the mix. The Strikha pendant lamp by Faina shows scale in the mightiest of ways—it’s nearly 60 inches round. Lulu and Georgia’s lovely Kalani style isn’t too cutesy thanks to its clover shape. Four Hands’s Overscale makes the case for waves, and Arteriors adds an extra flourish to its Mar chandelier.
